Intention gap

What is the intention gap? It’s the gap between what you intend (or assume) you’ll do, and what you’ll actually do when the time comes, affected by weather, traffic, do you actually have what needs to get it done, and so on. What is the intention gap? It’s the gap between what you intend (or assume) you’ll do, and what you’ll actually do when the time comes, affected by weather, traffic, do you actually have what needs to get it done, and so on.

One example: When my state went to all mail-in voting, I surprised myself by how easy it was. The ballot arrives a few weeks before the election; I can fill it out and put it in a ballot drop box, or into the mail. Also, if voters coordinate, one person can drop off the ballots for the household. We can choose the day. Unlike when voting in person, running late one day doesn’t mean you might miss your chance to vote.

This has been researched.

“In fact, as researchers Todd Rogers and Adan Acevedo explained in the Conversation, voting is similar to processes Americans do often that are hindered by what they call the intention-to-action gap: “These include: taking medicationspicking up prescriptionsexercising, and preparing a will. And this failure to follow through can have a cost beyond not having your voice heard in the democratic process.” (Source)

For that matter:

  • It’s been easier to do meds since I switched to using a pill minder instead of dealing with all the bottles every morning and evening. I fill it once a week; taking the pills is more automatic.
  • It’s been easier for me to build an exercise routine when I have a plan and set aside time. Often this involved an exercise buddy and going to the gym. Now there’s Habitica and 3 days a week where I tell myself that the only thing I have to do is use the treadmill.
  • I’ve also been planning breakfasts (and food in general, but I’m particularly impatient/dumb at food prep for breakfast) more. Instant oatmeal + fancy trail mix is a common breakfast these days because it’s fast and simple.

Where can do-ahead or planning help your life?
