Living ~400lbs

… and believe me I am still alive

Thankful Thursday

[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.]

1) Started doing full squats again* – not very many, and not using any extra weights, but even so, I am pleased with this progress.  ;)

2) Finished a big rollout at work, which has seriously reduced my stress.

3) Three-day weekend coming up.

4) The insurance company finally approved the prescription antihistamine, which combined with the Advair seems to be improving my ability to breathe.   It’s definitely making my eyes less itchy, too ;)

5) The man of the house picked up delicious fresh strawberries this week.  One morning I mashed a few to have instead of jam on toast (why have the “perserved” when you’ve got the real thing?)  Last night we finished the strawberries for dessert – along with some Lindt chocolates :)

*Some good instruction on how to do squats is here, though I will note that the site (like many exercise sites) is not fat-accepting.

  1. Ah, squats, the best thing, I’m told, for toning the thighs and butt. Unfortunately my knees creak in loud protests when doing them. Doing them in the pool alleviates the creaking. Gotta love that zero gravity feeling.

    1. That’s a good way to decrease the stress :)

Another I did was to sit in chair, slowly get up, slowly sit back down. It may not sound like much but if you’ve got knee trouble it’s a good way to build up the muscles.

  2. See, this is why I’m learning to love the Fatosphere more all the time. I weigh half what you do and I can’t do full squats. Well, maybe I could, but I’m a serious chicken about my knees. Your fitness clearly crushes mine, and I work out a lot. Not to compare, except that it’s one more reason to remind myself, NEVER ASSUME.

Oh yeah … strawberry season. The man of my house picked up some insanely expensive Rainier cherries last night, and I just didn’t have the heart to remonstrate. They are just too damn good.

    1. Well, I may not be more fit overall – I’m specifically focused on rebuilding leg strength / function due to a previous injury. So I may be working on things you aren’t and vice versa ;)

  3. has anyone ever thought to start a plus-size specific exercise website/blog? It could offer modifications as you have just given in the comments, and it could even have a yoga section with modifications etc. Just a thought.

  4. Another way to ease into squats would be to start on a leg press weight machine. By lifting weight with your legs you can start with a weight that’s lighter than your body weight, and build up the strength to actually do a squat. I loooooove the leg press machine, particularly since we fatties’ legs are already pretty darn strong just from the daily work they do carting us around!

    1. That works too. I’ve been using the leg press machine and also doing the “chair squats” while working up to full ones.

    2. Someone asked if I did any weight bearing exercise. I quipped, “Anytime I move it’s weight bearing exercise.”

  5. I finally had to call my RL YMCA trainer to remove the squats from my computerized training program until I tell him otherwise.

The program had started offering ball squats instead of the dreaded prisoner squats, but I’m not there yet, if ever.

  6. Fresh strawberries is a must-have in my house this time of year. My co-worker and some of her friends did this co-op type thing where you support a local farmer and you get a box of fresh in-season fruits and veggies. She gave me one of their home-grown strawberries and it was delicious. I’m also looking forward to the corn too.

I’m also thankful it’s a three-day weekend. Work has been getting more and more hectic, and Tuesday, we’re being audited by the county government. Something lovely to look forward to after a long holiday…

  7. Stumptuous isn’t *too* bad at FA. Some of the commenters aren’t – and I got edited for calling one out in what I thought was quite a polite but firm style. But the author has some fairly positive attitudes. It’s probably worth it if you have a few sanity watchers points to spare. See this for example: http://www.stumptuous.com/no-fat-chicks (it’s OK, the title is satirical.)
