Past and Present

Years ago there was a TV special about Women In Rock.  Many of my long-time musical favorites participated, including Seattle’s own Heart.

What brought my past and present together most plainly was this sweet duet by Amy Grant (whose concert was the first I attended on my own, when I was in middle school, and still pretty naive) and Melissa Etheridge (whose concerts I attended after coming out as bi and began wrestling with whether that need affect my faith)

  1. Interesting posts on religion. I like the post “Slavery, seafood, sexuality, and the Southern Bible” on the same blog.

I’m an atheist, or perhaps more accurately what you might call a ‘militant agnostic’ – I think it’s fundamentally impossible for human beings to understand enough about God for our understanding to have meaning. It’s the same way we can’t instruct hamsters on ethical behavior or the nature of reality, except God is the human and we’re the hamsters.

The four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the 15 Epistles are really damn explicit and totally literal with their instructions: love your neighbor as yourself, clothe the naked, comfort the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead, feed the hungry, give your wealth to the poor, rich people cannot join Jesus, in order to become a follower of Jesus you must give your possessions to the community. How can you reconcile that with modern Christian beliefs?

    • Whoops, 14 Epistles. I meant to type 14 but failed to proofread my post. (I studied to be a minister before becoming an atheist.)
