I created this blog 5 years ago. Thanks for reading :)
Today is also Labor Day in the US. I work in a field that is very un-unionized and I know unions aren’t perfect, but I was raised by union members and I support organized labor. Growing up I didn’t see much like my family in the media — fathers who take steel-toed boots and overalls to work, to wear at work? Who don’t own a suit? Then I discovered this song.
Through the mansions of fear, through the mansions of pain
I see my daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain
Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life
The working, the working, just the working life— “Factory” by Bruce Springsteen; lyrics are here.
Thanks for posting this. I ran across your blog today and I really appreciate the links to the clothing catalogs for those of us who are morbidly obese. I currently weigh well over 400 lbs. I held the same job for 14 years before being laid off last year due to county wide budget cuts, not due to my weight. I am married and own my own home. I can walk…albeit painfully because the weight has caused some damage in my knees. I am currently going to college (after a 20 year hiatus) to get a degree to hopefully find a career that I will love. Thank you for being brave enough to write about being fat.
Another song about workers that I like…
Dick Gaughan: Worker’s Song (Handful of Earth) (lyrics).
