A few months back, himself and I did a road trip for a family wedding.
What surprised me was the lack of “travel crud” afterward. Before January 2020, we went to multiple conventions every year. Every time, I’d have some sort of cold or virus (“crud”) afterward.
But not this time.
Why?
I think it was a combination of things.
At bathroom/fueling/food stops, we would mask before we got out of the car and keep the masks on until after we returned. (All our food was takeout and eaten in the car or our room for the night.)
When we stopped for the night, we would again mask while we checked in and ferried things inside. Including our air purifier. We’d run it on high while unloading other things. After half an hour of the air purifier running, we’d take off our masks.
(Also, we really pushed hard to get there a bit early, so we also spent a while in the hotel room playing tablet games and decompressing, me with crochet and a podcast on headphones, hubs watching a twitch stream.)
We continued to mask at the wedding, at the reception, and so on. We skipped the rehearsal dinner. Overall, I’m glad we went. But I noticed that even masked I didn’t want people to get too close. I was very comfortable in the hotel room with the air purifier. On the other hand, I can run the air purifier at home. I’m not planning on resuming my convention attendance.
But I did manage a 10-day trip and not get sick. I haven’t repeated it (yet). But if it helps othes: Masks, takeout, air purifier.
