So, that happened

Colonoscopy happened a week ago. The prep involved avoiding fiber a few days, then a day of “clear liquids”, followed by mixing MiraLax with Gatorade to “clear things out.”

The actual day of I was originally told to only take meds, but during a call the day before I was asked to drink water, tea, or apple juice that morning to avoid dehydration. (IV fluid shortage wasn’t mentioned, but I can’t say it wasn’t a factor.)

Because of my size, the doctor did the procedure in a full operating room. Part of me wonders if that was really necessary. I assume the anesthesiologist would have been available wherever the procedure occurred. If doing this in the OR meant everyone knew going in that I was very fat and was comfortable with that, it’s good. I’m told the obstructive in “obstructive sleep apnea” showed up during the procedure, so I had a partial intubation. I only know this because I was told in recovery and because my throat was sore afterwards.

One thing that was nice is that they had a gown that fit me, chairs that fit me, a scale that went high enough, a bed that worked, and so on. It’s nice. Since I’ve been in the area and using this hospital system (which also owns my primary care office and most of my specialist practices) I remember them adding wider chairs, benches, scales that go above 330lbs, and other size-includes changes when they added their weight-loss surgery practice. On the one hand, I think weight-loss surgeries are overused and I have declined it when offered. On the other hand, I appreciate having medical equipment that works with my body.

I noticed that some of my doctors have larger chairs that make me feel more comfortable. It is a positive change and I hope it continues.
