That’s the title of this piece on Yahoo! news about teens who sleep less eating more fats.  (Eating more fat = the “hefty price”.  Geddit?  Amazing how reporters think nobody’s ever made a fat joke before them.) In the study, adolescents who slept fewer than eight hours on a weeknight consumed more of their daily calories from fat and fewer calories from carbohydrates than teens who slept…

[a not-always-weekly exercise in gratitude] It’s Thursday and I’m thankful for: I have a job. Yeah, there were times Wednesday when I really just wanted to LEAVE, but … I have a job.  It provides me with income.  Income good. Nudemuse’s post on beginning body acceptance.  This rocks, and I’m glad I read it. The relaxing effects of a walk. Tylenol.  I am glad I have something to…

This quote on Health At Every Size is from Michelle, aka The Fat Nutritionist.  Links within the quote were added by me. [D]ieting purports to make all people lose weight, permanently. Because 80-95% of the people who engage in it do not lose weight permanently, dieting fails as an intervention. It fails to achieve its stated directive, and it also doesn’t seem to help people permanently pick…

You can pre-order Seanan McGuire’s next album, Wicked Girls.  Details are here.  The pre-orders will help finance finishing the album, and only 300 will be taken. Please note that she doesn’t have a definite release date yet. If it would bother you to not know exactly when it will be delivered, or to trust an artist who’s working on her own without a label, I’d wait to…

August!  Let’s see: Switched to a new layout. I’ve gotten more regular in my workouts, especially the strength training. Liss at Shakesville linked to me several times (which is very flattering!) If you’re curious, the most-read Living 400lbs posts that were written in August are: I’m squishy, but I’m NOT obese Michelle Obama: Let’s Harm Fat Kids As if the Biggest Loser wasn’t bad enough Deciphering studies:…

Yesterday I went to a Sounders game.  Besides the game, there was over a mile of walking to/from the stadium. Plus, our seats are on the 100 level, where everyone stands the entire game – so if you want to see the game you end up standing. Or, if you’re me, you sometimes migrate up to the not-always-sold-out disabled seats. Saturday the seat I usually sit in…

I thought this example Lisa Martinez made in the comments at the Well blog was one of the clearer examples I’ve seen for absolute vs relative risks. 100 women took ABC pill and 100 women took a placebo, which is not an actual medication. Of the 100 women who took ABC pill, 2 developed cancer and of the 100 women in the placebo group, 4 got cancer.…

You may have seen today’s Pickles. Transcript: Panel 1: Nelson asks Earl: Grampa, are you obese? Panel 2: Earl: Obese? No, I’m NOT obese. Panel 3: Nelson: [pokes tummy, with a “squish” noise] Panel 4:  Earl: I’m squishy, but I’m NOT obese. This illustrates much of the “obesity” discussion. Earl knows he’s fat.  Earl assumes he’s overweight, not obese.  He forgets that the definition of “obesity” was…

I’m not the only one who makes fun of the “food is medicine” “eat this and you’ll live forever or at least you won’t get cancer (maybe).” Am I? I’m not the only one who rolls my eyes at “superfoods” or who likes smoothies because they’re a quick breakfast, not because they’re “brain boosters“, right? Right? …and yet…I routinely add eat garlic, onions, and peppers for their decongestant…

I don’t know if it’s odd that I associate this song with going to work.  Songwriter SJ Tucker has noted that it was inspired by the beauties she’d seen working in coffee shops in Austin, TX. When playing a coffeehouse (as she is in this video) she often dedicates it to the people working at the coffeehouse, so that’s probably why I associate this song with work.
