I posted yesterday that I finally admitted that I have asthma and began using an inhaler before exercising. Walking uphill became easier. The second change came a few days later, when the new ARNP got the results of my blood tests. “You have a severe vitamin B12 deficiency. Do you eat eggs and meat? Or are you a vegetarian?” Yes, I eat eggs and meat – had…

Most days I use my inhaler pretty soon after waking.  What does asthma have to do with being fat? For a long time I didn’t think it was asthma; I thought I was just fat and out of shape.  I took Claritin to keep my allergies under control, yes, but I didn’t have asthma.  I might be panting walking up hill sometimes, or climbing stairs, sometimes even…

One of the things about being my size is that I don’t see many “people like me” in the media.  TV, movies, books…generally if it seems at all like “the fattie” is a joke, not a character, I don’t bother watching or reading it.  This does wonders for my sanity, even as it reduces my score on pop-culture quizzes. I do have Dykes to Watch Out For…

This popped up on Google News’ “Health” tab: Got a fat gene?  Get active for 3-4 hours a day Maybe you CAN blame being fat on your genes. But there’s a way to overcome that family history – just get three to four hours of moderate activity a day.

…and on the weekend we’re more likely to go for a more intimate option.   This post is about the practicalities of having sex as a very fat person and is likely not “work-safe“. If you’re at work, read it later.  Or if reading about sex is uncomfortable, please don’t read it.

One drawback to the CPAP is that if I move around a lot, it tends to slip off.  Not moving much during sleep means I wake up feeling a bit stiff.  (I also have some arthritis in my knees, but it’s usually not the knees that are stiff, it’s everything else…..) So, I usually do 10 minutes or so of stretches I learned in my yoga class. …

Often I wake before the alarm. Usually I snuggle under the covers until it goes off.  The man of the house may already be up, but he knows I’m still “sleeping” until my facemask comes off. I have moderate “obstructive sleep apnea” (OSA) I sleep with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine) which is basically a fan with a facemask to keep the airway open.  The…

If she ever got up to 400lbs she never told me, but then, she probably wouldn’t. I remember she had a chart during one of her diets.  At the top was ”  03″, and before the 0 was a shiny bit of Wite-Out.  It was clear that mom didn’t want anyone to know the first number.  At the time I assumed it was a 3, but now I…

Sparkpeople is a weight loss/fitness site I used it for a while, sometimes tracking food and exercise, other times just tracking exercise.  There’s message boards, articles, et cetera. One of the more popular topics was “What I’ll do when I’ve lost weight”.  Like wearing shorts, or a tank top, or a swimsuit. This was surprising, but also a bit sad.  Why? Those are things I already do.…

BMI doesn’t tell you much, but it does tend to show a bell-style curve over a large population. The chart at right, showing population distribution of BMIs from Mississippi in 2003, (source) gives you a rough idea. My BMI is about 60.  That chart? Doesn’t even show anyone of BMI 60. The official definition of “obese” used to be based on height/weight tables, which roughly corresponded to Overweight is…
