What expectations do people have when they start a weight loss program?  The Fantasy of Being Thin is very common, and usually isn’t about being less fat.  It’s about being THIN. So this blurb from The Practical Guide: Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines on “obesity treatment” actually came as a bit of sanity…

[a not-always-weekly exercise in gratitude] I don’t exactly feel like being thankful, but maybe that’s a sign I should look for things to be thankful about.   (It’s a Thing, partly to remind me of good things.) 1) New, comfy shoes. 2) Arroz camarones. 3) Making some progress in sorting my books…. 4) …and cleaning my dad’s garage.  (With generous help from the man of the house.  :)…

Lately I’ve become more fond of the newspaper comic strip Betty.  Today’s Springsteen reference didn’t hurt. Betty is smart, capable, and yes, a bit chunky.  Unlike, oh, Blondie, she doesn’t have an exaggerated shape.  Also unlike many women in comics, she works out, plays hockey, and is quite capable at work and around the house. I also love that in the current storyline she’s dissatisfied with her…

Happy (almost) June! Here in Seattle it’s not so much “summer” as “late spring”.   Yes, some of the rosebushes are starting to bloom, but we haven’t had a day yet over 75F.   Lots of gray skies, and hey, I don’t have to worry about watering the plants since the sky is doing that just fine… Most-read posts from May: Jeans and big bellies Why Don’t…

I’m not a space geek per se, but even I noticed the space shuttle Atlantis made her last trip – which reminded me of Marian Call‘s song “Good Old Girl” (lyrics) from her album Got to Fly.

You know how you get used to your life and forget things other people take for granted? Yeah. Listening to Lesley & Marianne’s Fatcast I started thinking about how life is different for superfat folks than it is for those size 24 and below.  I shop in different catalogs, I have a seat belt extender for my car … wait, did I ever blog about my car’s…

[a not-always-weekly exercise in gratitude] 1) Upcoming 3-day weekend. 2) Being able to ask for help. 3) Taking time for breakfast. 4) I do have clothes that fit and know where to buy more if I need them (and I caught up on Fatcast yesterday). 5) Exercise is continuing to mean that walking is just walking, not torture.

It took a year and a half, but I finally have an “elevator pitch” for my blog. “My weight is a big scary number that freaks a lot of people right out. Want me to demystify it for you?” Not that I necessarily need one, but there it is ;)

At the moment I’m in a fullish coffeehouse listening to Vixy & Tony perform Seanan McGuire‘s Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves :)  I have the remains of my mocha and just finished an openfaced pesto-and-cheddar sandwich. Earlier I went to the Seattle Sounders game downtown.  Since the man of the house works a little less than a mile from the stadium we can save on parking costs by…
