On the one hand, it’s good to have actual research backing this up.  On the other hand, it’s insane that this didn’t exist before.  From the NY Times: When poor people are given medical insurance, they not only find regular doctors and see doctors more often but they also feel better, are less depressed and are better able to maintain financial stability, according to a new, large-scale…

[An occasional exercise in gratitude.] At the moment I’m thankful for: My temp gig is continuing to go fairly well. My father is doing better. I got over my “but things can’t get better” thinking and saw my ARNP about my anxiety, insomnia, and depression symptoms.  My ARNP prescribed Celexa (for depression) and Ambien (for insomnia). Ambien does help me sleep.  Celexa does seem to help my…

For those in the US, my favorite “freedom” song, Garth Brooks’ “We Shall Be Free“. ….and a different turn on the idea of “Independence Day” by Bruce Springsteen.  (The song begins about 3 minutes in.) Hope you all have a good day, wherever you are ;)

If you didn’t know who Clarence Clemmons was, well…you’ve got a treat ahead of you. Clarence was a sax player.  A singer.  The “Big Man”.  He’d played American football in high school and college.  At a reported 6’4″ and 260lbs (or more) he was technically obese, but it wasn’t seen as a failing.   (Partly due, I’m sure, to being a man, and partly due to him…

It’s a stressful time in my household. Both I and the man of the house have temp gigs after months of unemployment.  A relative is ill, needs to move to an assisted living situation, and I’m organizing most of it.   The to-do list is long and getting longer. But I need to take care of myself, too.  To do this, I’ve been focusing on getting enough sleep,…

Ah, emails…. Is it really surprising that I don’t want to hear about the great new diet website? That I don’t want to read a book about weight loss? (No, not even your wonderful revolutionary diet that reveals the hidden secret of weight loss!) That I don’t want to go on a diet? That I don’t want to promote your new special low-carb-gluten-free-pomegranate-acai WonderWeight[tm] plan? No? Ah…

From an article on “what’s the best exercise” comes a concise summary of the benefits of moderate exercise: The health benefits of activity follow a breathtakingly steep curve. “The majority of the mortality-related benefits” from exercising are due to the first 30 minutes of exercise, said Timothy Church, M.D., who holds the John S. McIlhenny endowed chair in health wisdom at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in…

Oh, not again.  Still.  They’ve been level for years, but this time the Journal of the American Medical Association noticed. There’s discussion as to why, such as “people are getting healthier”.  Given how dieters often gain weight in the long term, I thought this perspective a bit more realistic: Dr. Ludwig said the plateau might just suggest that “we’ve reached a biological limit” to how obese people…

New job is going well.   It’s my first completely non-managerial job in years.  Even when I was a “department of one” I was was still doing a lot of project / process management. I’m enjoying just doing things. I also like this “getting paid” thing.  ;) My commute is about an hour each way, sometimes longer, depending on bus connections. This is longer than I’m used to,…
