ADA: Not all fat people get diabetes
26 comments on ADA: Not all fat people get diabetesFrom the American Diabetes Association: In a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of the American Diabetes Association, 2,081 Americans were asked questions to test their diabetes knowledge. The results showed that several diabetes myths and misconceptions are common and diabetes remains a misunderstood disease. […] Myth: If you are overweight or obese, you will eventually develop type 2 diabetes. According the survey, approximately three…

Thankful Thursday
[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.] 1) My knee may not be getting much better but it’s not worse. 2) Being able to structure my day around resting, icing, and exercising my knee. 3) Ibuprofen, Doan’s, heating pads, and other such modern wonders. 4) The man of the house, for being patient with my whining. 5) This summary of why increasing health costs for fat people is counter-productive.

On the Hamster Wheel
One of the frequent refrains in the discussion of Angry Gray Rainbow’s “I Hate Exercise” post was the dislike of exercise bikes, treadmills, and other “hamster-wheel exercise-for-the-sake-of-exercising”. I grinned when I saw it, because yes, I’d rather walk to someplace than walk in place or around the block. But, then, there’s today. Today my leg is hurting. Uneven strides and uneven walking surfaces are painful…and the…

So how was your weekend?
Continuing from last week, my left thigh and knee are very sore today. Saturday I went to the soccer game and found that walking a 1/2 mile or so, generally, wasn’t a problem — as long as I kept a regular stride and speed, and stayed on mostly level sidewalks. (Which is much easier on a treadmill or at a modern shopping mall than in Seattle’s Pioneer…

Fun: Two Lumps: Fat & Furry
The left leg (which has traditionally been the “good” leg) has decided to give me pain and occasionally not want to work. I’m not thrilled with this. I am exercising carefully and taking ibuprofen and trying to not freak out. In the interest of not freaking out, I’m reading They Still Suspect Nothing: Two Lumps Year Four which came in the mail today. (It’s the 4th year of…

Thankful Thursday
[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.] It’s Thursday and I’m thankful for: 1) Over 300 responses to yesterday’s poll and some great discussion in the comments. Wow! 2) Ibuprofen, because I slacked off on walking for a week and strength training for mumble and both knees hurt. 3) But, despite slacking off I can and did walk a mile on the treadmill OK… 4) … and my knees feel better after…

Repost: Wellness Prescription
A repost from January, inspired by Fillyjonk’s post quoting Three Men in a Boat. I got Connie Willis’ comedic time-travel novel To Say Nothing of the Dog from the library (and liked it enough to buy it). It starts off a little confusing but is pretty funny, and full of golden age mystery fiction references. It also contains several homages to the 1889 book Three Men in a Boat (To…

Thankful Thursday
[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.] 1) The man of the house made dinner — patty melt for me, with minced onion & mushrooms mixed into the patty, and a chili burger for him. Yum. 2) Successfully moving my sleep schedule earlier, so I get to work in good time and get enough sleep. 3) The cable company is currently our of lives and we have faster internet access…

Thankful Thursday
[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.] 1) I am thankful and honored to read the comments people have made in response to yesterday’s post. 2) Hugs from the man of the house yesterday. 3) Elevator repairs at work this week mean I’m walking more stairs. I’m managing this MUCH better than I was afraid I would ;) 4) Experimenting with a new-to-me yoga routine from Megan Garcia’s book Megayoga. 5) I feel…

Newsweek: Fat and Healthy
Lesley at Fatshionista linked to a good Newsweek article on fat hatred. While reading it I noticed a related web exclusive by Daniel Heimpel* called Fat and Healthy: Why It’s Possible. Heimpel discusses some of the research on being fat and healthy (or not), citing Katherine Flegal’s study which found that being overweight decreased the risk of death compared to normal-weight folks, and even moderately obese…

Another Logic Question
I’ve read several stories on the new US life expectancy data. The quick story? Life expectancy for white females born in 2007: 80.7 years Life expectancy for white males born in 2007: 75.8 years Life expectancy for black females born in 2007: 77 years Life expectancy for black males born in 2007: 70.2 years Overall life expectancy for babies born in 2007: 77.9 years Now, what…

Links: Healthy Enough, Attractiveness, Photoshop
This quote comes from a personal finance blog, but it ties into the “enough” conversation a bit: If one defines the word rich in non-monetary terms, the seemingly herculean feat of “getting rich” may be one of the easiest (and most valuable) accomplishments of one’s life. What if “rich” is simply defined as “being content?” […] It is quite true that without sufficient financial health to provide…

What’s Enough Exercise?
This started as a conversation over at Spoonforkfuls’ blog. living400lbs Says: […] One of my recurring issues with injuries is finding the line between working out too much and not working out enough…. spoonfork38 Says: Yeah, it’s that definition of ‘enough’ that gets me almost every time. I mean, enough for what, exactly? living400lbs Says: In my case? I’m working out enough if I avoid that nice…

Small Pleasures
Tuesday I got tired of feeling stiff each time I got up from my desk. I started an experiement: even if I’m just getting up to get coffee/tea or go to the bathroom, I “take the long way”. I walk through more of the office than strictly necessary, then downstairs a flight and back up. I don’t feel stiff after doing this, and also more awake. Why…

Thankful Thursday
[A weekly little exercise in gratitude.] 1) I haven’t had a romantic partner try dropping “hints” about my weight. Part of it is that I’ve had enough of a chip on my shoulder to say, “I know I’m fat. I’m not trying to make my weight go up or down. If that’s a problem for you, we shouldn’t date.” pretty early in my relationships. 2) Laughter. 3)…

Thankful Thursday
1) Being able to work remotely. 2) Noise-dampening headphones to keep me from killing the lawnmowers. 3) Summer solstice has passed. The days aren’t actually shorter yet, but knowing they won’t get any longer helps. 4) My knee doesn’t bother me walking down and up hills as I go around the block. (For those who haven’t been here: The flat parts of Seattle are man-made.) 5) More…
